Def Jam Executive VP Shakir Stewart committed suicide earlier today (11/1/08).

Gyant broke the news on his GyantScoop blog and sources close to Stewart have confirmed his death, but couldn’t provide further information. Details on the incident were still sketchy at press time.

Stewart earned his stripes as an A&R at Def Jam Records, signing stars like Young Jeezy and Rick Ross before being promoted to Executive VP at the company earlier this year. Though his promotion came several months after Jay-Z’s resignation, Stewart asserted he wasn’t the God MC’s replacement. Stewart is also credited for signing Ciara, among others, in his pre-Def Jam days. Stay tuned as this story develops.

Domonique Larue Interview: Raw Elegance

October 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

YOU ARE ONE OF THE NICEST MC’S ON THE MIC. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE RAP GAME?

I’ve been rapping since I was 7 years old so I can say that’s it’s apart of me however it wasn’t until I was 12 that I realized that this is I want to do this for a living. After that realization I started working on my craft by freestyling at the table at school then in High School I went to career center for vocational music and from there I learned the business side of the music industry as well as showmanship. From there I earned a rep just by performing locally to statewide to nationally.

WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES IN THE RAP GAME?

Many! Outkast, Lauryn Hill, Red and Meth, Nas, J.Dilla, Queen Latifah, Minnie Riperton, Busta Rhymes, Fugees, Jay-Z, Earth, Wind & Fire, Pac, Ludacris, Wu-Tang, Def Squad, Marvin Gaye, Rah Digga, Stevie Wonder and that’s just to name a few. Really, it’s timeless music and it doesn’t really matter where the source comes from.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE AND SOUND?

I like to call it Raw Elegance. It’s a mixture of both, I love to give it to em raw but at the same time I can tone it down. I’m also a storyteller, I have so many stories to tell and I like to tell all kinds, anywhere from love to street shit.

ALOT OF PEOPLE SAY THAT FEMALE MC’S AREN’T GETTING THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE, HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THAT?

I respond by makin dope music! That’s the only way, our rep today is ridiculous, I can tell anyone I rap and they’ll look at me like I’m crazy but that’s okay because I’ll be sure that my voice grabs their attention.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE STATE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS IN GENERAL?

It’s corporate. No doubt about it, substance is gone but we still have some artists who have slipped through the cracks and I plan to be one of those artists. It’s bad but I won’t let that bring me down, I’ll continue to make good music until someone takes notice.

ONE THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC IS ITS EMPOWERING AND THAT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE TOO OFTEN IN THE GAME TODAY. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THAT ROUTE OVER THE TYPICAL BULLSH*T WE HEAR ON RADIO?

I’m about good music and good music is undeniable no matter who does it. Good music will outshine all that wack shit, trust.

WHAT SONG OF YOURS WOULD YOU SAY YOUR MOST PROUD OF?

Song 4 Rome. I love that so much because it’s so much truth behind it, and I’m sure we know someone like that it doesn’t have to be particularly a man because women can be the same way. AIDS is serious and I felt I had to speak on it.

WHO ARE SOME PRODUCERS OR RAPPERS YOU’D LIKE TO WORK WITH?

J.Dilla (R.I.P), I wish I had the chance to work with him, but it’s all good, we’ll work together when I meet him in the clouds. Also, everyone I named as my influences.

IN YOUR BIOGRAPHY YOU MENTIONED YOU TRIED TO GET INVOLVED IN AS MANY CIPHERS AND BATTLES AS POSSIBLE. DO YOU STILL ENJOY THOSE?

Yes! It really doesn’t matter where I am, I feel I have to represent for my ladies so whenever I see guys in a circle ciphering, then trust I will be involved.

HOW HAVE PEOPLE RECEIVED YOU IN LIVE SHOWS?

Most definitely! Everywhere I go! The love is crazy and I appreciate all of my fans, and I know it’s cliche but I would be nothing without them.

LET’S TALK PROJECTS, WHAT DO YOU GOT NOW AS FAR AS MIXTAPES OR ALBUMS AND WHAT’S NEXT?
Well of course The Feelin Mixtape Volume 2.0! Right now I’m working on an EP titled “From Ohio With Love”, and three mixtapes! I’ve been in the booth heavy so everyone will be hearing new music from me sooner than later!

WORD ASSOCIATION-

J-DILLA- Classic
TALIB KWELI- Dope
50 CENT- Retire
JEAN GRAE- Dopest female doin it!
BUN B- Classic
SOULJA BOY- Funny

WE AT THE COFFEE SHOP WANNA THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND INPUT, ANY SHOUT OUT’S BEFORE WE ROLL?

I wanna give a shout out to my fans! As I said before I wouldn’t be anywhere without yawl!

Interview with Dizzle (CEO of P.B.C. Ent) “Everyday im Hustlin”

October 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

HOW DID PBC ENT FORM?

We started as a clique hanging and doing what boys do like throwing partys you know trying to make money, we called ourselves the Play Boi Clique. I, CEO, Dizzle, use to rap back in the day, but after having a son and working all the time, I never had time for all of that. It wasn’t until when my younger brother, Mouse, Co-Ceo, called me up telling me to check out his friend (J-Fame) with great rap talent, who was creating a buzz on youtube, that was when we got our first breath of P.B.C. Ent.

WHAT DO P.B.C. STAND FOR?

(Play Boi Clique) The first meaning was boys who run game, not as in the Playboy bunny Although that slightly resembles the symbol.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT COME WITH TRYING TO RUN AN INDEPENDENT LABEL?

Fanbase, exposure, promoting, organizing shows, Keeping the artists focused, in the studio, and there stage presents, and all around getting to know the business.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS O PBC?

J-Fame, Certified Hood Stars (C.H.S.) who includes J-Wild, Anom aka The Dream Killer, J-Mann, Khaos, Gutta, and more to come.

WHAT SOUND DO THEY BRING?

They all have their own unique style to each one of them. There all different then what I’ve ever heard before with punch line after punch line and their own unique swag and personality on a track. J-Wild style, being from Tennessee, has that southern wild swag that makes his verse be your favorite verse not to mention his singing talent too. Anom TDK comes with verses that you will remember after just hearing it once and a very lyrical one at that. J-Mann comes with a Chicago swag along with TDK, and thats just C.H.S. J-Fame on the other hand comes with an epic song just with a freestyle, he has an east coast mid-west swag and pulls it off well.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PLANS FOR PBC?

Just Taking it step by step and not getting too ahead of ourselves. So far were just trying to do as many shows as we can, but we plan on being the next big epic such as Aftermath, Bad Boy, and Def Jam. I know those are big names but we have big goals.

WITH THE INDUSTRY DOING HORRIBLE AS FAR AS SALES AND RECOUPING EXPENSES, HOW DO YOU PLAN TO OVER COME THAT?

By marketing and producing are own tracks….bootlegging is going to be around regardless how much we enforce it, so by selling our mix-tapes on the streets and shelves ourselves we are ahead of the game.

DO YOU THINK IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE MUSIC, THE ECONOMY, OR BOTH?

The economy, music will always be music no matter how it sounds people are always going to buy it rather its off the streets or off the shelves, just as long as it sounds good.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS?

People aren’t making money like they use to, they’re making more money off ringtones. It doesnt have that positive message, its all about lifestyles and where your from, what your about, and what you been through, instead of situations that are going on right now as far as the music business goes there are alot of fictional artist out there.

DO YALL PLAN TO STAY INDEPENDENT?

Were planning to stay Independent in some ways, right now all were shopping for an distribution deal to help move a little further.

HOW WILL PBC STAND OUT COMPARED TO OTHER LABELS?

We will make songs to be heard on the radio, myspace, etc. that compares to club bangers, dope slangers, the lovers, the gangsters, and everybody, not for just one group of people and thats how people will relate to us. We just have to bring out songs that the people love and not just something we want to rap about. If we just rapped about selling drugs then only the drug dealers will relate unless we came out with a simile to drug dealing such as the song “White girl” comparing to cocain.

WHAT PROJECTS DO YALL GOT OUT NOW, AND WHAT’S COMING NEXT?

J-Fame has mix-tapes such as Cocain Cowboyz Vol.1 and 1.5 he has Mr. 317 out right now and Da Legacy Albums 1 and 2 coming soon C.H.S. have their Background Check Mix-tape coming soon and the Certification album dropping next year. And they all will be in a collab mix-tape called P.C.S. coming soon

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND INPUT, ANY SHOUT OUT’S BEFORE WE ROLL?

First and for most we would like to thank God, Players sports bar for their support, Diamond girls night club for our first show, all of our artists, J-Fame, C.H.S., Khaos, Gutta, Co-Ceo Mouse, President KenSu, A&R Lex, V.P. Tony, No Mercy from Harlem, all our supporters, haters and all our fans and family.

Crumm interview: Damn Im Cold

October 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

YOU ARE ONE OF THE RAWEST LYRICISTS OUT THERE. WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR FAV’S COMING UP?

Thanks. I grew up heavily influenced by a lot of whom the average fan would considered great; Scarface, Pac, Biggie, LL, NWA, DJ Quick, Snoop, Too Short, Nas, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap, Pun etc., however, it wasn’t until Outkast and Canibus dropped that I truly felt something inside of me shift and give me an unexplainable passion for the microphone.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET IN THE RAP GAME?

I started physically rapping in 99, out in Texas while I was in junior college I learned how to “wreck”, but I’ve been creatively involved in music some way or another all my life.

HOW DID YOU GET THE NAME CRUMM?

CRUMM is an acronym I made up before I started rapping. It’s funny now I think back on it because I wouldn’t touch a pen before I figured out a name that I thought would serve my purpose artistically. Eventually I came up with Creating Riches Using My Mind. (CRUMM)

YOU SET THE INTERNET ON FIRE WHEN YOU DEBUT A VIDEO ON WSHH.COM SPITTING RAW FOR SEVERAL MINUTES STRAIGHT. HOW HAVE PEOPLE RECEIVED YOU?

Believe it or not, my fan base was pretty big before World Star, after them though, it got ridiculous!!! I’ve gotten a mixture of love and hate, predominately hate because that’s just the way of the world I guess. I ain’t trippn none, I love everybody the same.

HOW LONG HAS IT TAKEN YOU TO PERFECT YOUR CRAFT?

I’ve got a long way to go, but like I said before, I’ve been in this since 99, so from that point until now I would say is the time span responsible for where I stand lyrically.

THE SOUTH IS OFTEN STEREOTYPED FOR BEING JUST PARTY MUSIC AND NO TRUE LYRICISM. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?

I feel that when you put any kind of music in its element it makes sense. I love southern music but I don’t wanna hear it in a hip hop club and vice versa. I think when people say shit like that it’s just a means to cover up the frustrations of not being able to figure out the formula of the times.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS IN GENERAL?

Selfish. There’s lots of talent just not enough lanes, and the ones capable of opening up a couple are content on hogging the road. I’m telling you bruh, people aren’t lying when they say this rap game is the WWF!!!

WITH THE SLUMPING SALES THESE DAYS, DO YOU PLAN TO STAY INDEPENDENT OR WOULD YOU SIGN WITH A MAJOR?

I would absolutely sign to a major with the right amount of promotion/marketing money, and a release date. I don’t think music is dying; I just feel that the consumer market has been left waiting in vain for that something or someone to embrace. In my personal opinion, it’s just a matter of who’s going to fill that void.

SINCE YOUR VIDEO SURFACED, HAVE THERE BEEN CATS ON THE STREETS STEPPIN TO YA TRYING TO BATTLE?

Naw, not that I know of at least. I don’t do the battle thing; I am a die-hard fan though. Nothing’s better than seeing a verbal onslaught.

WHAT PROJECTS YOU GOT COMING AS FAR AS MIXTAPES OR AN ALBUM?

I’m always working on something. I have enough material to where I can just put out whatever makes sense. I do have an EP coming out with my DJ, DJ Mist entitled Lyricology: Fundamentals Of The Wrist And Tongue. I may drop another mix tape if that’s what the fans want, other than that I just like to create honestly.

WORD ASSOCIATION. Ima give you some names; tell me the first thing that comes to mind when you hear them.

Killer Mike- Intellectually Unmatched
Crooked I- West Coast Beat Crippler
Bun B- South’s Finest
K-Rino- Most Underrated Southern Lyricist. It’s funny you brought up Rino; we have something in the works.
Supernatural- Battle Czar
Shawty Lo- Lo cool man, I just think he should fire whoever the fuck gassed him to go at Tip, lol.
Last but not least Crumm- Lol, God with a mic.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND INPUT CRUMM. ANY SHOUT OUT’S BEFORE WE ROLL?

Sure. God, my kids, my family, FM (the coldest manager ever!!!) Coffee Shop Magazine for thinking enough of me to do this, World Star Hip Hop, Rahiem Shabazz, Hip Hop Gossip Girl, Hip Hop Is Read, Rock The Dub, Different Kitchen, my girl Isis over at I and L Promotions, Augusta, Georgia, St. Thomas Virgin Islands, and everybody that likes or dislikes me, as long as you feel something. God Is Love.
